Tunic Dress - A Retro Fashion Come Back

By Sadie Brown

Fashion is always changing. In order to keep up with what is in and current, you ought to be reading about the trends no less than six months (from time to time upwards of a year!) ahead of time. The latest upcoming trend for young women is the tunic dress. If you are over thirty-5 and reading this, you can be shaking your head right now. You are probably thinking, "Wait... I wore those years ago, now these are back?" As is inevitable with most fashion styles these are, indeed, back. The dresses which are showing up on runways internationally take a bit of a twist on those who you could possibly have worn 2 or more decades ago.

First of all, the upcoming version is more form fitting than the old-fashioned sheath that you might have had in your wardrobe. The tunic dress of yesteryear was similar in fashion to a caftan; it was relatively large, blousy and not extremely flattering. This time around though, things have taken a turn for the better. By giving these dresses a slightly cinched waist, and a body-skimming silhouette, designers have been able to highlight a tiny waist, feminine hips, and a shapely figure. This isn't clothing meant to be used as a cover up. It has transformed into a very becoming outfit. Shape isn't the only thing that has evolved...

The new style of tunic dress comes in many different cuts as well. A one-shouldered style is perfect for a warm day out shopping or lunching with girlfriends. The long sleeved mini is another new cut; this one is great if you are going out of the town clubbing for the evening. It covers just enough without looking frumpy. The trapeze cut is great if you intend to beach it for the day. This is easy to toss on over your two-piece bathing suit when you want to create a run for a cool beverage. Moreover, due to the swing of the material, it will help keep you cozy on a hot summer day.

In addition to the many cuts, the tunic dress is found is each pattern and color imaginable. Choosing the right color is all about skin tone. Once you locate a color that flatters you, stick with it. Adding in designs will provide you with variety and play up your features. Many dresses come with detailing such as lace, embroidery, jewelling, sequins or buttons. Individual style is a massive factor in choosing the right combination of color, pattern and detailing. Thankfully, tunics flatter nearly all body shapes, so this need not play into your decision too much.

Now that you know the tunic dress is back, it is time to shop. On the internet stores will offer the greatest variety of colors and sizes. If you have something particular in mind, don't forget to use the store's on the internet search function. If you have any trouble, try sending an email with your request. Stores can often put you on an alert list that lets you know of newly added merchandise as well as upcoming sales.
