Putting Your Best Leg Forward

By Stanley Kessler

If you are fortunate enough to be blessed with good legs, then you're going to love the spring season. Short shorts in every style from tap pants to boy shorts and hot pants were the hottest thing in spring fashion shows.

A fashion craze comeback from the '70s, these shorts will have the ladies crowding the gyms and tanning salons.

While you may think of shorts as gym wear, or at most for casual outings, this spring's offerings will be for play, work and evening wear. With a variety of cuts and fabrics to choose from, these new short shorts will not just revive the classics but will also take its potential to the next level.

What ever you call it, whether "hot pantaloons" or tap pants, these shorts hug the figure less with turned-up cuffs or ruffled edges that are usually no more than two inches down the thigh. Can be worn under a blazer for a more chic look or a slouch top. To make you look more sophisticated, use nude or neutral tones.

Having what is called a negative hemline which could potentially show some bun, basic hot pants look like a wholesome underwear. Picture pinups from the '40s and '50s or even bathing suits from that era. For evening wear, they would be studded and sequined and for a more classic look, they would be high-wasted. To avoid looking like you forgot to wear pants or just rushed out of the gym, pair them with a classic blouse or jacket.

For the winter and fall, shorter shorts were shown with over-the-knee boots, though you won't have have to worry about that in warmer temperatures. Heels are the way to go to help your legs look more shapely. The shorts alone will have enough sex appeal without wearing tall heels, although for evening wear you may want to go a little higher. For a classic and casual look, go for a modest heel and a sling-back bag.

Boy shorts have a neutral hemline and usually sit below the waist. Pair them with denim and you have the perfect spring look for more casual outings. But don't just think Daisy Duke. Give it your own twist by topping it off off with a loose t-shirt, add big bracelets and finishing off with a pair of flats or sneakers.

Many fashion designers have included retro short shorts in their collections this spring. Your local department store might tone it down a bit but be ready to watch the hemlines rise. These style might look fabulous on well-toned celebrities and lucky teenagers but this look is not for everyone.

You're better off looking for another spring style if you're uncomfortable with the look or if your body is not suited for it, even if this trend is getting a lot of attention. Remember that you can easily outlast this trend, which has made it's comeback only after being gone for several decades.
