Tips To Use Balikbayan Boxes

By Samantha Forest

Filipinos living or working abroad is known for sending gifts and presents to their friends and loved ones in the Philippines. It is their way of showing their love and support to those they have left behind back home. Their method of sending these gifts is through the use of a package or more popularly known as a balikbayan box.

Balikbayan box company had sprung up over the years and can be found in just about every State in the U.S. and other parts of the world where Filipinos are situated.

A balikbayan box is a corrugated box that is used by overseas Filipinos to send nearly anything from canned goods, chocolates, toys, clothing to electronics, lotions and vitamins. Most of these boxes measures 20 x 20 x 20.

Part of the reasons why this kind of service is so popular is the cost. Unlike air shipments where rates are determined by weight, balikbayan box service charges a flat rate that can range anywhere from $45 to $90 depending on which part of the Philippines it is being sent to.

Though shipping time may take up to a month or two, most are contented since these boxes are delivered door-to-door and comparing to the number of items that can be placed inside the box due to its huge size as opposed to the limitations as well as cost of sending it through a postal office or air cargo.

Convenience, reliability and cost are the three main reasons why most Filipinos would opt for this kind of service. However to be careful when choosing a freight forwarding company since many businesses have mushroomed around US especially in the State of California offering these type of services that entice customers with lower prices but are unreliable.

Always go for one that have been in the business for a while and have a good reputation to ensure that your package will get to your families safely and on time.
