Shopping For High-End Prom Dresses

By Ashley King

There are all sorts of style and price levels when you talk about a new prom dress, but those in the very highest levels of price stand almost in a class of their own. For the most part, these are formal gowns with a sleeker, more elaborate design than most other prom gowns. Certain designers work more in this price range than others. And when you look at the quality of gowns at this end of the cost spectrum, you get the feeling that however much you have to pay, you are paying the right price.

A quick look at the rissyroos.com website for prom and formal dresses will serve as an illustration. If you sort their gowns from highest to lowest price, you see that many of the higher-end gowns come from designers like Mac Duggal or Tony Bowls, with Jovani and Tiffany Designs, plus a few others also making appearances. Many of the more expensive dresses are sheaths, which promote a very elegant look. Here you'll find the taffeta, the side-slit skirt, and the ruffles or roses down the skirt. Buying a prom dress from a collection like this will make you look very "high society" indeed.

Coming in perhaps not at the very top, price-wise, but still having some very high-end prom night dresses, are designers like Jovani, Tiffany Designs and Sheri Hill.

While Jovani has a few of the strapless sheath dresses with ruffled skirts, this designer seems more relaxed even for the expensive gowns. They tend to flow, and for the most part look like they'd be quite comfortable to wear. Sheri Hill, meanwhile, stays formal. But a prom dress from this designer is more likely to be a wide-skirted romantic gown, perhaps with lace roses on the skirt.

People who buy a prom dress from one of the more expensive collections of Mac Duggal or Tony Bowls will be stepping into a very adult world of elegance and high culture. The very design of such a formal prom dress goes in that direction. But on the other hand, not everyone will want to look like a femme fatale, and may prefer the more romantic look of Sherri Hill, or the more flowing, colorful aura of the Jovani gowns. Fortunately, even at this high level of cost, there is still some room for variety.
